DETENTION OFFICER

Responsibilities:

While working primarily inside the Boone County Jail and interacting in a face-to-face manner with detainees, the employee assists in maintaining facility security and ensures the safety of staff, detainees, and the public by directing and controlling detainee movement inside and outside the facility as needed, enforcing facility regulations, monitoring and documenting detainee activities, overseeing the intake and release processes, managing visitations, logging and preparing various detainee records, transporting inmates as needed, and performing other essential duties related to the efficient operation of the facility.

Status: 

Full Time, Non-exempt

Working hours: 

6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. AND 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Must be able to work either shift at the departments discretion.

Qualifications: 

High School Diploma or equivalent; 21 years of age or older; applicant must not have any felony convictions; must not have other criminal convictions within the last 2 years, excluding traffic violations; no marijuana use or possession in the past 2 years, and no other illegal drug use or possession in the past 5 years; vision acuity of 20/200 and correctable to 20/20 in both eyes; must possess a valid Operators license at time of application and a valid Missouri Operators license at time of appointment. Successful individuals must be able to meet the strenuous physical demands of detention facility management, operate keyboard equipment, enunciate with radio traffic, and exhibit exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Applicants must pass a pre-employment drug screen. Must pass the online keyboarding score with a minimum score of 25 NET wpm. Must meet minimum qualifications set forth by the FBI and MSHP CJIS Security policy. Qualified females are encouraged to apply in order to maintain a required female officer to inmate ratio. Applicant must have no felony convictions or any other criminal conviction or pled guilty to in the past 2 years, excluding traffic violations, no marijuana use or possession in the past 2 years and no other illegal drug use or possession in the past 5 years. No employee, while on duty, shall have visible tattoos, body brandings, body, facial or tongue piercing jewelry, with the exception of traditional ear piercings for female employees. Ear lobe stretching (also known as 'gauging') is prohibited. Tattoos, brands, and body piercings must be completely covered by either the department uniform or civilian clothing, depending upon the employee's assignment. Employees should be cognizant of potential safety hazards in wearing jewelry. Uniformed personnel whose tattoos extend below a short-sleeve uniform shirt, must wear the long-sleeve uniform shirt. Flesh-tone wraps, sleeves, band-aids, chemical covers are prohibited.

Starting Hourly Pay Rate: 

$17.47 Additional $.65 per hour shift differential
