The Boone County Office of Emergency Management Issues Warning About Severe Weather Outbreak This Afternoon
COLUMBIA, Mo. (March 14, 2025) - The National Weather Service St. Louis office has issued a Moderate Risk for severe weather across our region late this afternoon and evening. A fast-moving line of storms is expected, with the primary threat being damaging straight-line winds that could exceed 80 mph. Large hail and strong tornadoes (EF2+) are also possible.
In response to this elevated threat, the Boone County Office of Emergency Management is now at Level 3 activation, with OEM staff actively monitoring conditions and available to coordinate resources as requested.
Key Details:
- Timing: Thunderstorms are projected to move through the Boone County area between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, traveling east at nearly 70 mph. Storms will not remain over any single location for long.
- Primary Hazards: Sustained winds could reach 80+ mph, capable of causing significant damage to structures and power lines. Large hail and strong tornadoes are possible.
- Outdoor Siren Activation: If winds reach or are confirmed to exceed 80 mph or if a tornado is confirmed, Boone County will activate outdoor warning sirens to alert residents to seek immediate shelter.
- Additional Hazards: A Red Flag Warning has been issued for parts of the region due to a combination of strong winds, low humidity, and dry fuels. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
Recommended Actions for Residents:
- Stay Informed - Follow local media outlets, the National Weather Service, and official City channels for updates.
- Have a Plan - Be prepared to seek a safe location. Ensure mobile devices are charged and you have a reliable way to receive weather alerts.
- Secure Loose Items - High winds can turn everyday objects into dangerous projectiles. Bring in or tie down patio furniture, trash cans, and other items that could blow away.
- Heed Warnings - If outdoor warning sirens sound or official advisories are issued, take immediate shelter indoors, preferably in a basement or interior room without windows.
Boone County's Emergency Management team will continue to coordinate with the National Weather Service to assess weather conditions and respond as necessary. Updates will be shared through local news outlets and social media.
