Boone County Outdoor Warning Siren System (Updated)

June 14, 2024 – The Boone County Office of Emergency Management (BCOEM) received reports that the outdoor warning sirens did not sound when activated last night in parts of Northern Boone County, including the Hallsville and Centralia areas.

In response to a National Weather Service (NWS) tornado warning, Boone County Joint Communications attempted to activate the outdoor warning sirens from the radio console per policy, resulting in some sirens being heard in parts of Northern Boone County. Staff and contracted agents worked quickly to identify and correct the issues with the outdoor warning siren systems.

A programming issue prevented certain sirens in Northern Boone County from being activated. This issue has been corrected. Boone County Government is also updating internal processes to build redundancies into the system to ensure that the outdoor warning siren system works as intended.

The outdoor warning sirens are a vital part of an integrated warning system, intended to notify residents outdoors of potential severe weather threats. Residents are also encouraged to create a Smart911 profile and opt in to receive Boone County Ready weather alerts, purchase a NOAA weather radio, and stay weather aware by obtaining the most current forecast from their local weather station.

To learn more about the outdoor warning siren system, visit the BCOEM website at https://www.showmeboone.com/oem/resources/sirens.asp.
