Severe Weather Preparedness Week: March 4 - 8, 2024

February 26, 2024 –The National Weather Service and Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) have designated March 4 – 8, 2024, as Severe Weather Preparedness Week. The Boone County Office of Emergency Management (BCOEM) encourages schools, businesses, organizations, and households to take part in each themed day by discussing related safety topics and, on Wednesday, participating in the statewide tornado drill.

Severe Weather Preparedness Week includes the following themed days:

Monday, March 4 – Have a Plan/Receive Weather Information Day
Citizens in Boone County can receive weather information by creating a Smart911 profile and opting in to receive weather alerts.

Tuesday, March 5 – Lightning Safety
No place is safe outside when thunderstorms are in the area. Remember, when thunder roars – go indoors.

Wednesday, March 6 – Tornado Safety
The Annual Statewide Tornado Drill will be held at 11:00 AM, weather permitting. During this drill, NOAA Weather Radios will be activated and the outdoor warning sirens in Boone County will sound. This test will serve as the March test of the Boone County outdoor warning siren system.

Thursday, March 7 – Hail/Wind Safety
Hail and wind are both hazards of severe thunderstorms. In the event of hail or strong winds, go inside and move away from windows.

Friday, March 8 – Flood Safety
One of the primary causes of flood-related deaths is driving into and through low water crossings.  If you are driving and encounter a flooded road, turn around – don’t drown.
