Hazardous Materials Training Exercise

February 14, 2023 – The Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the Boone County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) have partnered with Callaway and Cole Counties to conduct a hazardous materials exercise on February 15, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., in the Cedar City neighborhood of northern Jefferson City, Mo.

The exercise is designed to realistically simulate three separate hazardous material incidents to test the following capabilities of first responders from all three counties:

  • Notification & Warning
  • Communications
  • Coordination & Control
  • Public Safety
  • Resource Management

During this exercise, citizens will notice a high volume of response personnel and agency representatives from the respective counties in and around the Cedar City neighborhood which is located near the interchange of U.S. Routes 63 and 54.   This activity is part of the exercise and is no cause for concern.  This is strictly a training event, and no hazardous or dangerous materials will be used during the drill.  Citizens are reminded not to call 9-1-1 unless they are reporting an actual emergency.

Agencies involved with this exercise include: Boone County Office of Emergency Management, Callaway County Office of Emergency Management, Cole County Office of Emergency Management, Boone County Local Emergency Planning Committee, Callaway County Local Emergency Planning Committee, Cole County Local Emergency Planning Committee, Jefferson City Fire Department, Columbia Fire Department, Cole County Emergency Response Team, Southern Boone County Fire Protection District, Holts Summit Fire Department, Cole County Sheriff’s Office, MU Health Care, Callaway County Ambulance District, Jefferson City Parks and Recreation, and the American Red Cross of Central Missouri.

To attend the exercise as an observer or for other media inquiries, contact Hannah Wichern at 573-554-7912 or via e-mail at hwichern@boonecountymo.org.
