Boone County Offices and Boone County Courthouse To Be Closed From 12:00PM-2:00PM on August 21, 2017
August 17, 2017 – Boone County Government offices and the Boone County Courthouse will be closed from 12:00PM until 2:00PM on Monday, August 21, 2017 to allow employees to experience the total solar eclipse. This will include all offices in the Boone County Government Center, Boone County Annex and Boone County Courthouse; Boone County Community Services; Boone County Public Works; and all non-essential operations at the Boone County Public Safety Campus.
With support of the Elected Officials, Department Directors and Judges, the Commission passed Commission Order #357-2017 on August 15, 2017, which authorized the closing of County offices from 12:00PM until 2:00PM. This order, per County Policy 4.5, will allow County employees to have their lunch hour together from 12:00-1:00 and to view the eclipse between 1:00 and 2:00. If employees are not at work on that day, or, by virtue of their job, cannot take the time off, they will be credited one hour of sick leave for the additional hour that County offices are closed.
All Boone County and Courthouse employees will receive protective eclipse glasses, as well as lunch provided by donations from Elected Officials and Judges.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime event we want our employees to be able to experience. We are anticipating a large influx of people to our community, which also means we are anticipating a large increase in traffic. We decided to give our employees a way to celebrate this event without having to go anywhere to do so," said District II Commissioner Janet Thompson.
