Boone County Public Safety Joint Communications reports more calls to 911 in 2014

March 5, 2015

Boone County Public Safety Joint Communications announced today that the number of calls handled by 9-1-1 telecommunicators increased in 2014.

According to figures compiled by PSJC:

  • Telecommunicators managed a total of 82,685 9-1-1 emergency calls in 2014, an increase of seven percent over 2013.
  • The increase marks the seventh consecutive yearly increase in 9-1-1 calls to the Joint Communications Center.
  • Seventy-nine percent of all 9-1-1 calls came from cell phones.
  • Telecommunicators handled 353,018 total phone interactions in 2014.
  • Based on 2014 statistics, telecommunicators received an average of over 226 emergency calls every day.

The increasing number of calls received by the Boone County Joint Communications Center emphasizes the need for residents to remember that 9-1-1 is to be used only for emergencies, crimes in progress and life-threatening situations. For other non-life-threatening situations requiring attention by a public safety department, the non-emergency number of #573-442-6131 should be used. When an unnecessary call is made to 9-1-1, it can delay a response to someone who really needs help.
