Elimination of 911 Telephone Tax Now Effective
January 3, 2014
The 2% tax levy on telephone landlines to fund 911 Public Safety Answering services has now been eliminated in Boone County.
On the April 2013 ballot, a sales tax to fund a new 911/Joint Communications Service to be operated as a department of Boone County Government was proposed. In the weeks leading to the election, the Boone County Commission indicated that, should the voters approve the proposed sales tax, the landline telephone tax currently in effect would be eliminated. Boone County voters approved this sales tax proposal in the April election. The County Commission then voted to eliminate the landline telephone tax, and that elimination has become effective as of January 1, 2014.
Boone County Presiding Commissioner Dan Atwill said, "As promised, we are passing along to the citizens of Boone County these tax savings, created by eliminating the telephone landline tax levy for 911 services. We very much appreciate the confidence the voters have placed in the County by passing the 911 sales tax levy in April, 2013, and we look forward to completing the transition of those vital public safety services from the City of Columbia to Boone County."
