Things you may have missed...

County Announces Economic Development Grant

On Monday, Boone County Presiding Commissioner Ken Pearson and Fourth Ward Councilman Jerry Wade announced that Boone County has received a $47,935 economic development planning grant to inventory the county’s gaps in labor supply and demand, and the need for training among the citizens of the greater Columbia and Boone County region. The grant was approved by the Central Missouri Workforce Investment Board (funded by federal Workforce Investment Act of the U.S. Department of Labor and the Division of Workforce Development of the Missouri Department of Economic Development).

The grant request was made by the Boone County Commission on behalf of an ad hoc Columbia/Boone County Citizen’s Task Force who voluntarily assembled to begin planning for the long-term economic expansion of the region through postsecondary adult and technical education, training and development.

Purchasing Annual Report

On, Thursday, the Purchasing Department presented their 2009 annual report to the Boone County Commission.

Board Appointment

On Thursday, the Boone County Commission appointed Jay Creasy to the Building Code Commission.

Coming Up...

Quarterly Commission Meeting

n Monday, April 5, the Boone County Commission will meet for adjourned term at 9:30 p.m. in the Boone County Government Center, 801 E. Walnut, Columbia, Mo. There will be no commission meeting on Tuesday, April 6.

Sheriff's Department to Raise Money for Special Olympics

The Boone County Sheriff's Department along with the Columbia Police Department and the University of Missouri Police Department will participate in the 16th annual Tip-A-Cop event at Red Lobster (1716 Interstate 70 Drive Southwest, Columbia, Mo., 65203) April 8 and 15. Local law enforcement will be present at the restaurant during the lunch and evening hours to interact with the patrons and spread awareness of the wonderful work Special Olympics is doing for the 15,000+ athletes in Missouri. All "tips" or donations go directly to Special Olympics.

The event is one of many sponsored each year by the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Missouri, the single largest contributing group to SOMO. The event began in 1995 in a collaborative effort between the local Red Lobster restaurant and Law Enforcement in an effort to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics.

Tree Workshops

Local engineers, landscapers and developers are invited to attend a tree scape design workshop April 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boone County Government Center, Commission Chambers, 801 E. Walnut, Columbia, Mo. The workshop will include presentations on urban trees and shrubs, how to use trees in site design and how to select the best trees for an urban environment. There will also be a walking tour of downtown Columbia to see examples of how trees are used in the urban landscape. Cost is $10 per person.
