Boone County aerial mapping begins

March 22, 2011

Beginning Wednesday, March 23, 2011, the Sanborn Map Company will begin a process of aerial photography in order to create updated maps of Boone, Cole and Callaway counties. Two to four aircraft will begin the process of photographing the three counties, which is expected to take two days to complete. The counties have joined efforts on this year's aerial photography in order to reduce costs and overhead.

At 19 points around Boone County are located large aerial markers. The markers are 12 feet by 12 feet and made of strips of white, ripstop nylon secured to the ground with stakes. The markers are photo identifiable, and make it possible to accurately rectify locations on the ground with the aerial photos.

The aerial photography is scheduled to be done Wednesday, March 23 and Thursday, March 24. In the event of inclement weather, however, one day of the flyovers may be rescheduled to March 28 or March 30.

Residents who see the aerial ground markers are asked to leave them in place. The markers will be removed once the aerial flyovers are completed.

Please direct any questions about the markers to Lamar Henderson, Boone County Public Information Officer, at
573-886-4312 or lhenderson@boonecountymo.org.

A sample photograph of a target marker is available on the Web. A PDF map of the marker locations around Boone County is available on the Web.
