Methods of Payment

General Payment Information

The General Payment Information section pertains to information regarding partial payments, as well as information and fees related to payments by credit card or check. Payment Methods are outlined in the next section of this page.

Partial Payments

With the exception of online payments, which must be paid in full, the Collector's Office accepts partial payments for current and delinquent property taxes and assessments. Any balance remaining unpaid shall become delinquent on the first day of January following the year the taxes are due. Statutorily imposed late penalties and fees will apply.

  • Partial payments will not prevent any litigation or parcel of land from being subject to the Delinquent Tax Certificate Sale.
  • Partial payments cannot be made for licenses or food operating permits.
  • A receipt will be issued when the tax statement is paid in full.

Payment By Credit Card

Credit Card Convenience Fees

When using a credit card to pay taxes, a convenience fee of 2.3% will be added to the total bill amount and charged to your credit card. The minimum convenience fee is $1.50.

All convenience fees charged on credit card transactions are retained by the payment processing company. The Boone County Collector's Office does not charge or retain any of these fees.

Accepted Credit Cards

We accept American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa cards.

U.S. Mail

Mail to:

Boone County Collector
Boone County Government Center
801 E. Walnut St., Rm 118
Columbia, MO 65201-4890

Payment methods accepted via mail:

The post office date (postmark) determines the timeliness of the payment. ยง139.100 RSMo states that property taxes "shall be deemed paid as of the postmark date stamped on the envelope or other cover in which such payment is mailed." If payments are made via registered or certified mail, then the date of the registration or certification is considered the postmark date.

Payments with postmarks after December 31 will be assessed applicable penalties and fees.

It should be noted that not all types of postage are postmarked or canceled by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and the piece may not be postmarked on the same day it was deposited.

  • An example of postage that is commonly postmarked is a standard postage stamp that is purchased and affixed to the piece of mail.

If there is no postmark or cancellation by the USPS, the piece of mail must be dated and received by the Collector on or before December 31 to be considered timely.

Examples of postage that are not commonly postmarked by the USPS are:

  • Metered mail on which the postage is printed on the envelope or a label by a machine that is licensed by the USPS.
  • Pre-canceled stamps that are purchased through a private vendor.
  • Automated postal center (APC) stamps which are purchased from a self-service machine or kiosk located within a USPS lobby.
  • Pre-sorted mail that has a permit imprint. This type of mail is commonly used by bill pay services such as online home banking.

The entire amount due must be paid before a receipt will be mailed.
